ORTLES — A spectacular rescue operation captivated the Ortles Mountains, Italy, in early October 2026, when a mountain rescue team deployed a helicopter to evacuate an individual in critical condition from a high altitude. This incident, involving the lowering of a winch by 70 meters, stands as a testament to the bravery and precision of rescue teams amidst extreme terrain.
The rescue drama began when reports emerged of a climber, let us call him Marco Rossi, who was reportedly trapped on a steep Ortles cliff. The Alpine Rescue Command (SAR Alpini) immediately responded to the emergency call. A specialized rescue helicopter was flown to the location, with experienced pilots having to maneuver among challenging mountain peaks and strong winds. Limited visibility further complicated every maneuver.

Upon reaching the victim's location, the team immediately conducted an initial assessment and provided first aid. The evacuation process from the steep cliff to the helicopter was filled with tension. Using special techniques, the victim was secured in a rescue stretcher and slowly lifted back into the helicopter, observed by several other climbers who happened to be in the vicinity.
Upon arrival at the nearest base, Marco Rossi was immediately transported to a regional hospital for further treatment. Medical officials confirmed that his life was saved thanks to the swift intervention and professionalism of the SAR team.
