JAKARTA – Dr. Skander Bouassida, a prominent cancer specialist and former heavy smoker, emphatically states that many individuals still underestimate crucial everyday risk factors for cancer development. Through his personal experience and medical expertise, this skilled surgeon reveals four tangible steps proven effective in lowering one's chances of contracting the deadly disease, simultaneously dispelling common societal myths.

Dr. Bouassida's personal transformation is noteworthy. Before fully dedicating himself to cancer treatment and prevention, he admits to having been a heavy smoker. That experience, he says, gave him a unique perspective on the devastating impact bad habits have on internal organs, particularly the colon.

"I have witnessed firsthand the severe damage caused by smoking in patients' intestines," Dr. Bouassida stated during a recent health discussion with medical practitioners in Jakarta. "That experience motivated me to be more vocal in advocating for effective prevention, not just treatment."

According to him, the main key to reducing cancer risk does not solely depend on genetic factors but rather on a series of lifestyle choices. He outlines four main pillars of prevention that every individual should prioritize.

The first pillar is a balanced, fiber-rich diet. Dr. Bouassida emphasizes the regular consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while limiting processed red meat and foods high in sugar and saturated fats. "A Mediterranean diet or plant-based eating patterns are proven very effective in reducing inflammation and protecting body cells," he explained.

Second, adequate physical activity. Lack of movement or a sedentary lifestyle directly correlates with an increased risk of various types of cancer. Regular exercise, even moderate intensity like brisk walking for 30 minutes daily, can make a significant difference.

Third, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption. Dr. Bouassida highlights that smoking is not only the primary cause of lung cancer but also increases the risk of cancer in many other organs, including the colon, throat, and pancreas. Alcohol limitation is also essential given its link to liver and breast cancer.

The fourth pillar is maintaining an ideal body weight. Obesity is known to be a significant risk factor for at least 13 types of cancer. "Excess fat in the body triggers chronic inflammation and hormone production that can stimulate the growth of cancer cells," he elaborated.

In addition to these four pillars, Dr. Bouassida also criticizes public understanding of certain risk factors that tend to be overestimated or misunderstood. He cites the obsession with certain "superfoods" without holistic lifestyle changes often provides a false sense of security. "Cancer is a multifactorial disease; no single magic food can prevent it alone," he asserted.

Another crucial aspect often overlooked is the importance of early detection through routine screening. Dr. Bouassida expressed his enthusiasm for his own upcoming colonoscopy, a procedure vital for detecting polyps or precancerous lesions in the colon before they develop into invasive cancer.

"I do not just recommend, I also practice. Colonoscopy is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent colorectal cancer," he said. This procedure, according to him, should be part of the routine health agenda for individuals above a certain age, following the latest medical recommendations for 2026.

Data from the Ministry of Health indicates an increase in colorectal cancer cases in Indonesia over the past decade, underscoring the urgency of prevention and early detection. The national campaign 'Healthy Lifestyle 2026' also continues to encourage the public to adopt positive habits for long-term health.

Public health issues are always a concern. Some time ago, the world was also shocked by a tragic incident in Berlin when a deadly van plowed into a CSD 2026 crowd, highlighting public safety concerns. Nevertheless, focusing on disease prevention through lifestyle remains a global priority, as demonstrated by various health initiatives worldwide. Terror Van Strikes CSD Berlin: One Dead, Radical Motive Uncovered 2026.

Dr. Bouassida hopes his message can reach a wide audience, change perceptions, and motivate society to take proactive action. "Prevention is the best investment for our future," he concluded.
