TRAPANI — A heartbreaking tragedy shook the Trapanese region of Sicily on early Saturday, May 17, 2026, when a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a scooter claimed the life of a 17-year-old teenager and left three others seriously injured. This unfortunate incident occurred on a secluded provincial road, adding to the long list of fatal traffic accidents involving young people in Italy.
The deceased victim, identified as Davide Rossi, was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries sustained. Meanwhile, two other victims, a 16-year-old girl named Sofia Bianchi and a 19-year-old young man, Matteo Greco, were reported to be in critical condition and were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital. A third victim also received medical treatment, although their condition was not as severe as their two companions.
This fatal accident occurred around 2:30 AM on provincial road SP29, a route connecting rural areas around Trapani. Dark conditions and minimal lighting at that hour are suspected to have exacerbated visibility, although investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Investigation teams from the Trapani traffic police were immediately dispatched to the scene. They collected evidence, including vehicle debris and tire marks, to reconstruct the horrifying moments before the fatal collision occurred. The primary focus is to determine vehicle speeds and the possibility of negligence.
Emergency medical personnel who arrived at the scene immediately provided first aid. Resuscitation efforts for the 17-year-old victim were unsuccessful. The injured victims were then stabilized and evacuated by ambulance to Sant'Antonio Abate Hospital in Trapani for further treatment.
The Director of Sant'Antonio Abate Hospital, Dr. Elena Moretti, confirmed that the two critical victims were undergoing intensive surgery. "Their condition is very serious, and we are doing everything possible to save their lives," she briefly told the media that morning.
The event instantly caused profound grief for the local community in Trapanese. Various expressions of condolences flooded social media, calling for increased awareness of road safety, especially among teenagers who often lack experience.
